Mobi The Friendship List: A Novel with Free EASY Reading!

Our book club (which has recently read Isabel Allende's excellent Long Petal of the Sea and Alex Michaelides' Silent Patient) chose this for a light summer read. Give it a miss. We thought it would be about 50-somethings reflecting on their life choices, relying on friends, and re-grouping for ultimate purpose. Instead, it's about improbable 30-somethings who have no moral grounding, and are floundering their way to... who knows what. The main characters (Ellen, mother of a teen who hasn't dated since she got pregnant with her now 17 year old son, and her widow friend Unity who keeps her home like a mausoleum to her KIA husband) challenge each other (the Friendship List) to finally blunder into relationships and sex without any sense that it might or should lead to.... LOVE (shocker), and the writing consistently appalls. If you're looking for shallow and clueless characters and a writer who uses nouns as verbs ("Alana dimpled.") and writes like an adolescent ("Ellen knew her life had gone from amazing to sucky;" "he knew it was a dick move" "he didn't know if she would go cray-cray on him.", buy this book.
